2009 Community Service Project Update...
On December 12th, Quilts, sweat shirt hoodies, and filled ditty bags were delivered to the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla. This annual event from our Community Service Group has become a Christmas Tradition. If you would like to help out with this project, contact Kathy Petty. The group will begin making the quilts for the 2010 Christmas sometime in January.

The White Bluffs Community Service group has been busy this year. Led by Kathy Petty and Marlene Martin, this group will be delivering a quilt for every bed in the residential unit at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla. The group has also made zipper “ditty” bags that will be filled with warm socks, a phone card and Christmas Candy. If you would like to help with this project, or join this Community Service Group, please call the Center at (509) 967-2555.

115 and Counting..

The Community Service Group has also prepared 115 fleece blankets for the Women’s Domestic Violence Shelter. The fleece blankets will belong to the women and children who seek shelter. The group is currently working on 30 quilts that will remain at the Shelter and make the bedrooms warm, comfortable and inviting. This group is led by Marlene Martin. If you would like to help with this project, please call (509) 967-2555.

  Textile Conservation - October 5, 2009

Humanities Washington awarded a grant to the White Bluffs Center to help with the presentation of a Textile Conservation Workshop. The workshop was open to the public and included information on cleaning restoring, conserving, displaying and storing our historic textiles.

The White Bluffs Center has a permanent collection of historic textiles that will be displayed for the community in 2010. Watch for this historic presentation.

June 6, 2009 - The June General meeting  included a “sew in” to create receiving blankets for the Iris Ministry, founded by Rolland and Heidi Baker in Mozambique, in 1995.

These blankets are for the Mothers waiting outside the gates of the centers, carrying premies (infants), with nothing to cover them. The blankets will be mailed to the Iris Ministry in California and from there, shipped to the Mission in Mozambique, the poorest country in the world.

Iris Ministries care for almost 2,000 children at centers in Mozambique and neighboring countries.

White Bluffs Center
Veterans Christmas Project

On October 3, The White Bluffs  Featherweight group delivered 25 hand made bed quilts and 9 lap quilts to the Veterans Hospital (Wainwright Center) in Walla Walla, WA. The veterans who received these quilts have fought to keep us safe and to safeguard our freedoms.

White Bluffs is currently preparing Christmas Gifts for each patient in the residential unit. We are hoping to provide each with a sweat suit, long underware, socks, day planner, and other items.  The phone system at the hospital will not allow patients to make outside calls without a phone card, so we are asking for donations  to provide each veteran with a phone card so that they may contact their friends and family.

The gifts will be delivered  to the Vets at the Wainwright VA Hospital.

UPDATE:
Thanks to many donations from the Tri City Quilt Guild and this community, we met to sort and organize all donations on Dec. 7. After a shopping trip to purchase additional thermal underware and tee shirts, and to insure that all bags contained an equal number of items, we assembled 30 nylon zipper bags.

These bags were delivered to the hospital in Walla Walla, WA on December 19, 2008.

Each Vet received a warm sweat suit, a pair of thermal underwear, warm socks, a
colored pocket tee shirt,
notebook and pen, assorted Christmas candies and a Christmas card with a 400+ phone card inside.

A special
Thank you to everyone who made donations to this project. Special thanks to the members of the Tri-City Quilt Guild, (who adopted this as their Christmas Project) and the Benton City/Richland Post #115 of the American Legion.

We also wish to thank Retta Warehime, Judy Deneen, Mary Thomas, Millie Volkman, Marlene Martin, Lena Johnson, Sue Pinard, Mike Huntington, Winnie Burt and Barbara Minton. We could not have "made it happen" without your help.

White Bluffs will continue to provide support to our Veterans at the Hospital in Walla Walla.  If you would like to support this project, please contact us at info@whitebluffscenter.org
