 2010 Summer Childrens Classes  
June 10 to August 17, 2010
 
The Pepsi Refresh Program has provided 
funding for this year's program.
 
 Classes in machine and hand sewing, quilting, weaving, knitting, basketry, felting, kumihimo, jewelry making
and a new category: Traditional Crafts.
Traditional crafts include Sock Buddies, Card Making, Papermaking, Non-electronic Toys, Nested boxes, Corn husk dolls, Gift hangers, 
Felted soap and Washi Tape fun.

Class Schedule

 

Sewing

Beginner Machine Sewing, age 7 and up. Learn the basics of sewing safely, and make a project to take home. All supplies and sewing machines are provided. June 25, 10-12 noon

Scrappy log Cabin Pillow, age 8 and up. Make a log cabin quilt block and finish it as a pillow. Class will be offered on June 29 and repeated again on July 24, 1-4

Apron Class, age 7 and up with a parent. Parent and child will create both a child’s apron and an adult apron. Parent should have some sewing experience. Fabric, pattern provided

Magic Pillowcase, age 10 and up. This is another great class for an parent and child to take together. Create a fun pillowcase with contrasting border you have to see to believe. June 26, 10-12 noon

Bring on the Buttons, age 8 and up. Make and decorate a 12" quilt block with yo-yo’s and buttons. Should have knowledge of sewing machine.

Beginner Hand Sewing, age 6 and up. Learn the basics of hand sewing, basic embroidery and make a project to take home.

Counted Cross Stitch, age 12 to adult. Using these nifty little kits from DMC, studelts will learn to cross stitch a small basket of flowers on Aida fabric. All supplies provided by DMC. These small squares (2X2) can be used on a card, in scrap booking or on a bag.

Wednesday, July 7, 10-12 noon

Sewing and Kumihimo, age 10 and up. Make a 16 strand braid for a purse strap with great colors and pattern to match your purse. The purse is a curvy little neck purse utilizing 3 coordinating fabrics. June 10, 1-3p

This class will be repeated in August.

Weaving

Weaving with Potholder Looms. Age 8 and up. Colorful potholders or large coasters will be woven on 9" potholder looms. Learn to create patterns by color, arrangement of loops, learn basic weaving terms.

This class will be repeated in August.

Knitting

 

 

Kid’s Knitting, age 9-14, Learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off, while creating a funny animal or a small bag.

July 13, 14, & 15 (3 days) 9:30 - 11:00 am

Baskets

Easy Round Basket, age 10 and up. This is a classic round basket with a round base and twining. A band of color and beads make it uniquely yours. June 15, 17 (2 days) 1-4 p

Square Basket, age 10 and up. This basket starts with a square base. Choose your own colors for the sides to make your own design.

August 10, 12 (2 days), 1-4 p

Traditional Crafts and fun stuff

 

Sock Buddies, age 7-10. Make a stuffed mouse or bunny, using a sock. Cut, sew, stuff, sculpt head, ears, nose & mouth, and sew a dress or overalls & shirt to fit.

Fathers Day Card, all ages. Construct a Fathers Day Card using rubber stamps and embellishments. June 17, 10-12 noon

Papermaking, 12 and up, Learn to make slurry by beating fiber, add color safe dyes. Learn to "pull a sheet" couching and the mechanics of why particles stick together. The paper will be manipulated to make art books or hand made paper.

Non Electronic Toys, age 7 and up. Use precut wooden materials to construct a Jacob’s ladder or other historical toy. July 6, 10-12 noon

Nested Boxes, age 7 and up. Make folded paper boxes that reduce in size from large to small. Makes a great gift box for a small gift.

Corn Husk Dolls, age 7 and up. Use corn husks to make a traditional doll. This age old design can take on several forms, a rose, a wreath, etc.

Wrapped Hangers, age 7 and up. Convert 3 wire hangers into non-slip custom made hangers that resist items from falling off. Using the puffy non-slip shelf liner, some unique gift hangers can be made. Students will provide 3 identical wire hangers and scissors. Teacher will provide the materials for wrapping. July 16, 10-12

Felted Soap, age 6 and up. Wrap a bar of soap in colorful wool roving. It’s like a soap in a wash cloth. When the soap is gone, you will have a felled wood bag. Students will provide a bar of Dove soap.

August 17 1-3 p and this class will be repeated on August 19, 10-12 noon.

Washi Tape

 

Washi Tape Fun, age 10 and up. Washi Paper Masking Tape is a multi-purpose adhesive tape made of washi, hand made Japanese Rice Paper. We will explore fun ways to use washi tape on paper and you will be surprised at the results.

Jewelry

Stamping or Embossed Jewelry, age 13 and up. Using embossing plates and athletic shoes to texture polymer sand precious metal clays. Surface embellishment with rub on finish and beads.

Millifiori Beads, age 7 and up. Use Fimo (polymer) clay to construct a "cane" of a design chosen, student will learn to prepare clay, use a pasta machine to roll clay, designate a color plan and use a geometric pattern to construct their design. June 25, 1-4 p

Chain Making, age 14 and up. Use jump rings to make a simple chain from copper or brass wire. July 23, 1-4 p

Wire Wrapped Jewelry, age 10 and up. Learning to wrap a pendant or ring with wire. Students should provide needle nose pliers, flat nose pliers and a small stone for wrapping. Teacher can provide stone if desired. July 9, 10-12 noon
